While most people assume that gota patti is a Rajasthani speciality, some argue that it is actually a type of Pakistani embroidery that developed in Punjab and moved to surrounding regions.
What is the process of making gota Patti?
Gota is essentially Lucknow’s gold and silver lace. The weft yarn in this metallic lace is metal-coated, and the warp yarn is made up of cotton and polyester ribbons. To make designs, little pieces of Zari are stitched into the fabric and the edges are sewed down. Zari threads are commonly constructed of actual silver, gold-plated silver, or a copper-based imitation coated with gold or silver colour.
In the past, royal families were the only ones who wore gota patti, but it is now much more widespread. This can be attributed to the move from gold and silver to gilt and lurex, as well as the large manufacture of gota in Surat and Ajmer using electrically powered swivel looms.
